About

Professor Les Howard ’62, passed away after a prolonged illness on July 6, 2017. He is remembered for his bigger-than-life personality, his wit, his always present hat, his wonderful laugh, his enjoyment of the “conversation,” his loyalty, and his warm devoted friendship. Join us in celebrating his life’s work as we aim to raise $100,000 to establish the Les Howard ’62 Memorial Endowed Scholarship.

The Les Howard ’62 Memorial Scholarship was created in consideration of Les’ devotion to mentoring and advising young people, many of them first generation students who wouldn’t have had a shot at a quality college education without Whittier’s generous scholarship support. Future Poets may not have the privilege of meeting Les or taking his legendary JanTerm course, Workshop in Urban Studies, but through this scholarship his legacy will live long into the future.

We believe that Les would be truly honored to know that this scholarship will be awarded, in his name, to first generation Whittier College students of Latinx decent.

Join us in honoring Les by making a gift of any size, and please share news of this wonderful tribute project with anyone who was impacted by our remarkable friend.

With appreciation,

Jim Mitchell ’62
Rita Hays ’62
Sandra Butzel ’62
Miguel Santana ’91
Perla Hernandez-Trumkul ’96
